Pen’s Garden

15 July 2019

Two years ago, we brought home this little Holland Lop, Pen. After nine months of smiles and laughter, we lost him unexpectedly during surgery. It was a hard loss and I have spent an extraordinary (and probably excessive) amount of time finding ways to cope with it. One of these ways was constructing what sanctuary I could around his final home. I built him a gate, painted him a sign, and bought any shade plants I could get my hands on. It’s not perfect: there are mornings I rush off to work without watering and sometimes the weeds get away from me, but I try.

With tonight being the anniversary of petting his big, floppy ears for the first time, I’d like to share a glimpse into his garden. I hold tightly to the thought he would have been happy running through it.
